Review: Dark Avenging Angel by Catherine Cavendish

Dark Avenging Angel - Catherine Cavendish

Dark Avenging Angel by Catherine Cavendish

 My Rating:

I received a free copy of Dark Avenging Angel from the publisher in return for an honest review.

Dark Avenging Angel is the third book by Catherine Cavendish that I have read. I really do enjoy the style of Catherine's writing but this one felt a bit more young adult than her others. The premise was what really caught my eye and appealed to me but it didn't quite get there in terms of horror. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy it, it just didn't stick with me the way her others have done.

The book was well written and the characters and dialogue were believable. I found myself really rooting for the main character Jane and I enjoyed seeing her character grow and become stronger as the story progressed. The book held my attention and I wanted to read on and find out what happened.

The plot and pace were consistent but I would have liked it to have delved a little deeper into the creepy side of the angel and of the dreams. There was potential there to really expose the evil, scary intentions of the angel and I think because it didn't really go into that as much as I would have liked it to that that is what made it feel more like young adult horror than horror for me.

I kind of feel like I'm left wanting to know more, which in reflection is a good thing as it means the story caught my interest, but at the same time it's because I feel the book never really reached the depth of detail and horror that it had the potential to reach.

  1. After reading the synopsis, this book picked my interest. I'm a little concerned though there was something missing. I think I'll begin with Catherine Cavendish's other books.

    1. Saving Grace Devine has been my favourite by her so far, it's a ghost story and I just love the way it's written. The other one I have read is The Pendle Curse, it's about witches which I really enjoy reading about if done well. I would definitely recommend these two. :)

  2. Cool. Catherine sent me a review copy last month, so I should be getting to it in the next couple of weeks.

    1. Hope you enjoy it! Have you heard about Glenn's new one? I was talking to him today and he was telling me about it, he's going to send me a review copy. It's about werewolves. I love a good werewolf story, so really looking forwards to it.
